'Silent crisis' as food prices fuel hunger in Kenya

Drought, lack of agriculture policy, fuel costs and export bans are blamed
The crisis affects everyone but mainly the poorest households
Food price hikes can cause malnutrition and instability, according to one expert

(CNN) -- As the Horn of Africa struggles to deal with its worst drought in more than half a century, rising food prices are adding to growing hunger in Kenya.

Wolfgang Fengler, the World Bank's lead economist for Kenya, describes increasing food prices as a "silent crisis" that has been building up.

"It's a crisis because this region is still a poor region where half the population and more live below $2 a day," says Fengler. "They spend on average half of their income on food. And obviously if prices go up, then they reduce the food intake."

Last week, data released by The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics showed that the country's inflation increased for the ninth consecutive month in July to 15.53% year-on-year, compared to 14.49% in June.

The surge in the cost of living was attributed to price increases for food staples such as maize flour, maize grain, sugar and rice.

The price of a 90 kilogram bag of maize, which is the main food source for most Kenyans, jumped from about $16 in June 2010 to about $44 in July 2011 -- an increase of 160%. Sugar prices increased by 19.43% between June 2011 and last month.

Analysts say a confluence of factors has contributed to the dramatic increase in the price of some food items.

"It's obviously the drought -- the whole region has experienced a drought that has not happened in the last 60 years -- but in the longer run I think that the lack of agriculture, a lack of what poor people need, is a fundamental cause," says Dr Shenggen Fan, director general of the International Food Policy Research Institute.

"We were not able to help the poor people to grow their own food and to increase their resilience to drought," he adds.

The problem has also been exacerbated by other factors, such as high fuel costs to transport food, the weak Kenyan shilling and maize export bans by neighboring countries.

The Tanzanian government recently announced a decision to ban exports of maize and other crops outside the country in order to increase its domestic food security and keep prices of staple foodstuffs down at home.

Fan says such moves have hit Kenya's ability to make up for its dwindling production.

"In Kenya, the production was probably reduced by more than 50%," he says. "In the meantime imports are not coming -- the bans imposed by Tanzania and Ethiopia -- so from that import side, the government or the private sector have not been able to import maize enough and also the domestic production has declined, so when the production is going down the prices obviously will go up."

While maize prices have jumped worldwide since last year, the "tragedy" for poor Kenyans is that prices in the country have increased much faster than at the global level, according to Fengler.

Basically it's a system of re-distribution from the poor to the rich.

"If Kenyans would buy at international prices, they would just buy at something like $30 per bag of maize -- now they pay $45 per bag," he explains.

In theory, high food prices are not necessarily bad news in developing countries that depend on agriculture, giving small farmers an opportunity to increase their income.

In practice, however, only a small minority of farmers have enough land and capital to produce a significant surplus to make the most of higher prices, says Challiss McDonough, senior spokesperson for East, Central and Southern Africa for the U.N. World Food Program.

Fengler agrees that it's only a small share of food producers who are profiting from the high prices in Kenya.

"It's basically 1,000 farmers who are benefiting from a relatively inefficient system where prices are kept at a high level to the detriment of the mass of the population," he says. "Basically it's a system of re-distribution from the poor to the rich."

A recent study by international aid agency Oxfam found that soaring prices have forced most Kenyans to change their eating habits -- 76% of respondents in the country told the agency that they've changed their diets, with 79% of those blaming food prices.

McDonough says such price hikes affect everybody but have a disproportionate impact on poor households, leading to "increased levels of malnutrition, a decrease in income available for schooling or access to health services, and potential instability in those countries that are worst affected."

And with each natural disaster, the poorest have even fewer assets to sell, leaving them less money to buy food.

In this drought, pastoralists have seen their purchasing power plunge as the their emaciated animals decrease in value.

Fan calls on the international community to help Kenya improve its technology and set up large grain reserves. He also urges the East African nation to up its agriculture investment in order to reduce farmers' dependency on weather conditions, boost their productivity and improve their access to good maize seeds.

"I think the country still has ability to feed its own population, but they've got to fix their policy and their investment in agriculture," says Fan.

For Fengler, it's critical that Kenyans get to a situation where they don't use half of their income to buy food.

Instead, he says, they should be in a position where "they have a smaller share so that then, (they are) like in richer countries where people are complaining about food prices, but they're just complaining, not suffering."

When the space shuttle Atlantis touches down in Florida on Thursday, the United States will no longer possess the technology to launch a human being into space, nor will it have any vehicle on the drawing board capable of doing so.
Nearly eight years ago, President George Bush instructed NASA to finish the space station and retire the shuttle fleet. The aim was to eliminate the pricey shuttle program, as well as create a new human-rated vehicle that was safer and cheaper to maintain. The Constellation Program borrowed on the fundamentals established during Apollo but was to be endowed with exponentially advanced technology. Comprised of safer, cheaper rockets, Constellation was going to ferry astronauts back to the Moon where habitable bases would be established, vanguards for later putting human bootprints on the scarlet soil of Mars. However, the Bush Administration never funded the program as promised, ensuring it was over-budget and behind schedule. The Obama Administration, desperate to find high profile budget cuts in the midst of the worst recession since the Great Depression, deemed the project too expensive and killed it altogether. Many lawmakers, industry executives and former astronauts opposed the White House's decision, claiming that American leadership in space would end if Constellation was scrapped.

Throughout the history of the U.S. manned space program, each mission dovetailed into the next. With the cancellation of Constellation, NASA no longer has any large, long-term goals for which the agency can truly reach. The retirement of the space shuttle, a bittersweet event no matter the future, is, for many, now merely bitter.

President Obama proposed a controversial new plan that would completely rewrite NASA's mission-the development of commercial spacecraft that NASA could rent. While the administration still speaks of landing humans on asteroids and even Mars, the vision is vague and formless at best, more imprecise dream than tangible plan.

The shut down of the shuttle strikes many as ill-timed. Why retire one vehicle before a replacement is ready to take its place? While there was always going to be a gap of several years between the end of the shuttle era and the beginning of Constellation, that gap is now indefinite. The International Space Station (ISS) is due to be de-orbited in 2020. Once that occurs, there will be no human presence in space whatsoever. (At least in the West-China, which became the third country to join the elite group of space faring nations in 2003 when it launched its first "Taikonaut" into orbit, has announced that it will put a man on the moon by the end of this decade).

For now, NASA will buy ISS-bound astronauts room on Russian Soyuz capsules at a cost of $60 million a seat, a concession with NASA's former Cold War competitor that rubs many at the agency the wrong way. Most disturbing to some is that the policy, regardless of its efficacy or probability, is myopic to not only the countless advantages of a muscular space program, but also the catastrophic brain drain such a lapse will inevitably create.

It is often asked, why are we spending so much money on space when we have plenty of problems right here on Earth? Shouldn't we take the money we currently spend on space and use it a bit closer to home? The answer is two fold: we are actually spending very little on space and nearly every cent benefits us right here on Earth.

Think of the U.S. budget as your average computer hard drive. Should it become necessary to free up room, your first priority would be those items that gobble up the most space-videos and photographs, for instance. You don't first go in search of Word documents because they take up so little space that you'd have to delete a massive amount just to make a dent. In terms of the U.S. budget, NASA is a Word document.

In some ways, NASA is a victim of its own success. Because its return on investment is so high, public perception of NASA's budget has always been drastically inflated. A 1997 poll reported that most Americans assumed NASA's total percentage of the U.S. budget to be 20 percent. The truth is that NASA constitutes just .4 percent of the total U.S. budget. Not even half a penny on the dollar. Americans spent more on pet food and Chapstick every year. While a 2011 operating budget of $18.7 billion may sound like and indeed be a lot of money, it is a drop in the bucket compared to that of the Department of Defense (928.5 billion), health care (898 billion), pensions (787.6 billion), welfare (464.6 billion), education (140.9 billion) or transportation (104.2 billion).

With that .4 percent, NASA funds the space shuttle, the ISS, deep space probes, Martian rovers, space telescopes like Hubble, all its planetary research and much more. But NASA does far more than just basic science and exploration. It improves our standard of living, makes our lives easier, safer, more convenient, healthier and even more enjoyable. Most people are completely unaware of the products they use every day that had their origins in the space program. Consider the following list: cell phones, GPS, microwaves, satellite television, modern weather forecasting, cordless tools, artificial heart pumps, water purification systems, LASER eye surgery, fire retardant materials, advanced rescue tools, infrared cameras, enhanced prosthetics and literally hundreds of other products.

Isn't that worth half a penny?

The implosion of the space program means the loss of nearly 10,000 jobs. But while the livelihoods of thousands should disturb every citizen, more disturbing is the disintegration of the highly skilled workforce that goes along with it. Thanks primarily to the sheer gravimetric pull of NASA's wide-ranging and comprehensive research and development, the United States has maintained a place of scientific, technological and research dominance unmatched since WWII. Apollo 11 was a technological leap forward unparalleled in the history of humankind. It created an innovative undertow that sucked all of science and technology right along with it. NASA, by its very nature, created an atmosphere of cross-pollination in which numerous scientific disciplines from engineering, chemistry and biology to physics, astronomy and geology flourished alongside each other. This synergy led to better technologies which in turn generated countless advances. The vacuum left by the aerospace brain drain will have ramifications this country may not perceive for decades.

A 2009 study by the Organization for Economic Cooperation & Development ranked the United States 25th among 34 countries in math and science-the first stage of an intellectual black hole beginning to be reflected in companies and labs across the country. Historically, NASA has been a beacon of inspiration for schoolchildren. Without its siren call, children and the adults they become lose one of the most profound drivers of our country's scientific enterprise. If the success of America's early space program paved the way for unprecedented wealth and prosperity, then its loss will only exacerbate the rapidity with which America is falling behind the rest of the industrialized world. The very things that drive the engines of our economic growth are being eroded, and with it the standard of living Americans have come to both enjoy and expect. We've done more than create a world that is incapable of running without advanced technology. We're ensuring the next generation will not understand it or comprehend how it can be maintained.

Getting NASA's human space flight team operational again is akin to pushing a massive boulder up a steep hill from a dead stop. The president's dissenters are not, strictly speaking, against private industry taking on a greater burden in space, but rather feel that it is far too early to make such a transition. Two private companies, Orbital Sciences Corporation and entrepreneur Elon Musk's SpaceX, are currently constructing unmanned cargo vehicles to take over where the shuttle leaves off. However, Orbital's Taurus II rocket has not yet had its first test flight and SpaceX's Falcon rockets have met with limited success thus far, some exploding on the launch pad or failing in mid-flight. Such setbacks are to be expected and are indicative of both the complex nature and steep learning curve of rocket science. Fans of history will recall the catastrophic mechanical mishaps of NASA's early days. But these are precisely the sorts of bugs that should be ironed out before deciding to turn over the reins of space to private industry.

Currently, there is little hunger, either among the public or its leaders, to do great things in space. While the technology to return to the Moon and push on to Mars is available, the passion to build and use it has evaporated. Dreams of breaching the final frontier have withered and atrophied. Humanity, it seems, is no longer interested in being an exploratory species. NASA, always a beacon of humankind's ravenous appetite for new discoveries and species self- improvement is in danger of death by apathy and neglect.

Tiny update :)

Earth Hour 2011 is taking place on the 26th March (next saturday). The recent disaster in Japan has shown us how fragile life is. This is surely a timely warning that Earth is not well, and we should do whatever we can to conserve energy. Simple things like reducing food wastage, switching off electrical appliances when not using, changes plates only when necessary can potentially make a big difference!
I'm going to do my part on 26th March at 8.30 pm. Huijie will too! (huijie, we discuss about that CIP on monday ;D)

Something bad about it is that the 超美白 (which we usually don't use) caused us to be slightly unrecognizable, cos that mode in this machine makes people look over-chio, even him. but in general it's beautiful! wna take there again nxt mth. :) it's at bugis.

On relationships and friendships

At 18, the subject on 'relationships' is the hardest to learn. By relationships, i mean friendships and romantic relationships.

Who are the people i should, or rather, i can keep and who are those I should forget? So many people have drifted away from me. & that's because I allowed these sisterly relations to fall apart. "who am I to hold on? If i really matter to them, they'd initiate conversations with me." that's why I never really liked taking initiatives. It makes me feel desperate. I Don't have a good enough personality to warrant enough liking. And once the "stagnant period" between me and anyone lasts long enough, nothing can be done to savage the relationship. I'm tired. Then again, it's very selfish of me to wait for people's initiation.
sometimes im just unsure of who wants to be in my life and who doesnt.
i always leave it up to them.

Being in a relationship obviously doesnt make things better. As a survey has shown people generally lose two close relationships after starting a romantic relationship. Therefore it's even more difficult to maintain friendships. Not that I'm upset. I'm absolutely fine and in fact, happy with him alone. Sometimes I even want to have just him alone take up my whole world like he'd want to too. This is, however, accompanied with a huge fear of losing him. I know it's really easy to lose him. Sigh.

It's hard to be with me. I just hope you'll always stay.

I especially adore friends - not necessarily close friends - who are always in my vicinity. Who are always present. They give me a sense of... Security and warmth. Doesn't matter if they don't seem to care a hoot about me. It's better for them if they dont. 'cos Im thick skinned enough to disturb them. Hees some faces have already popped up in my mind as I type this :) These are the people whom I feel I owe the most to.
I'm supposed to hate their presence!

The second Most difficult subject - my heart and mind. The real reason I came to blog is that my chest currently feels freaking suffocated/stifled and I'm here to calm down. (My blog is my Zen garden, heh) My heart is an annoyingly difficult subject and sometimes I wish it would just disappear. Or at least turn into a freaking textbook I can flip through. I don't understand it. And that makes me feel like a deranged person when I feel frustrated and upset with things that are already long over. See, my flow of thought gradually becomes haywire as I reach this para. What do you want?

"Everyone hopes for someone who understands them better than themselves"? Thats just selfish.

Gahh, hope I'll be able to do work again after I shut this window. I came in the hope that I'd be able to do some work later after letting out some random thoughts (that im sure aren't the things bothering me now, though I don't know what is) :(

Kueh Bangkits
for new year! This week's baking is something like a trial session for me, cos i've never tried baking new year goodies before and they are different from cakes.

Hoping to bake many containers next week to give away! :D hmm.. but i baked 2 batches (1 for each kind: pineapple tart and kueh bangkit. oh, i cooked pineapple paste too.) for 5h today... if i'm going to give away 4-5 i'll have to bake.. 20h?! T_T i'll see about it :P

Recipe from here! love it. :)

Kueh bangkit
Ingredients:

225g tapioca flour
3 pandan leaves cut into small pieces
30g margarine
65g icing sugar
1 egg yolk
75ml – 90ml coconut milk
a pinch of salt

my working place! :P

1. Line a large pyrex bowl with greaseproof paper, microwave the flour and pandan leaves on high 1 min at a time for 5 times, stirring every minute.
2. Set aside, cool completely before using.

3. Remove the pandan leaves !!

3. Cream margarine with sugar and yolk till sugar dissolves.

4. Add in 75ml coconut milk and mix well.

5. Add flour to mix till a non-sticky dough is formed. If dough is too dry, add more coconut milk but add 1 tsp at a time, otherwise, dough may be too sticky. Leave dough to rest for half and hour covered with a damp cloth.

6. Take a quarter of the dough and roll dough on a floured table to 3/8 inch(this thickness is necessary to obtain a nice size cookie)and use cookie cutters to cut into shapes. Using a pincher to pinch desired designs. Alternatively wooden moulds can also be used and that omits rolling the dough.

7. Baked on lined tray in preheated oven at 300 f convection for 15 mins. Cookie should not brown.

it really melts in the mouthh! i prefer the brownish bottom kueh bangkits to the totally white ones (i cooked them in batches therefore the difference) cos the white ones taste really nuaaa and ..innocent. heh while the brownish bottom ones taste crunchy on the first bite before melting in the mouth.. They look more matured to me too. heh i know my description of food is weird..

Chinese New Year is around the corner!

Golden Pillow Pineapple tarts
that are not really golden.. such a pity..
I personally do not like this recipe much :( if you've eaten what i bake, i hardly credit any fault or well done job to myself. I usually blame it on the recipe :) if something i bake is nice, it's because the recipe is good.
sigh, i should have noticed that the tarts look really white in the pic taken from the site as seen above where i got the recipe from. I like pineapple tarts which are yellow in colour simply because they look tastier! Those i baked according to this recipe taste normal too...[edit](it's my fault that it tastes normal.. check the end of this post[/edit] One thing good is that the texture is awesome and crumbles in the mouth. :D anyway thank you Small Small Baker for the recipe!

Ingredients
*Pastry
220g unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
2 egg yolks
375g plain flour
2 tbsp corn flour
1/4 tsp salt
50g icing sugar
1 egg yolk, for egg wash

**500g pineapple paste, roll into little balls in advance (i bought them from Phoon Huat)

1. Sieve plain flour, corn flour, salt and icing sugar into a medium bowl.

2. Beat butter in a mixer until it turns light in color and fluffy. Add in pure vanilla extract, mix well.

3. Add in egg yolks slowly until well combined.
4. Slowly beat in the flour mixture until just combined. Use your hand to knead it for a few minutes until the dough comes together. Do not over-knead it.

be prepared to make this many tarts with 500g of pineapple paste!!! Rolling them is really boring....

5. Roll the dough into small rounds. Flatten the rounds and use it to cover the prepared filling. Brush the unbaked rolls with egg wash.

6. Bake in a preheated oven at 180 deg C for 10 to 15 minutes or till golden brown.

oh no.. just realised i didnt put vanilla essence.:( vanilla essence doesnt change the colour of the dough but rather the taste! the taste is okay now and like any other cookie.. but it could have been better!
sigh im careless even when baking. :(

Long time since I last blogged! This long hiatus is quite unexpected for me as I didn't think I'd be so detached from leisure things, such as blogging o.o I turn on the computer almost everyday for official things but other than scanning through blogshops and a few of the blogs I follow I pretty much not get distracted. Busy once again! :) to me, this is a good start. :)

I complain and grumble loads to ppl involved when I'm busy, but when I sit-down and think about it I quite like ithe feeling of being busy! :) Conflicting emotions i have... Then again, I love the big fat break best. Especially those after busy periods. Last year's holidays were awesome! :D Neiiii. I know i didnt hang out with many different ppl but it was still lovely;) I don't really care if I'm antisocial now, though I still mind my tons of other flaws and I hope to be better! Ooh but being antisocial doesn't mean I don't listen to people. I still wna be a listening ear if i can. :) tho I think i suck at that too. Ah, public relations skills! Back to the point. this year is not a year to be busy w extra stuffs luh! Get over and be done with them soon.

Ha.ha. Apparently I failed to achieve one of the simplest resolution I had - not to use the computer on weekdays unless it's for official work. This was caused by econs~~ i was trying to churn out an eons essay but after writing half the essay i felt like I was just making a poor attempt at lengthening the essay, which shouldnt be the point of writing! :( after reading through what i'd written i thought "wts this is like a textbook. Failllllll" and gave up. is the problem with econs or essays? Rawr must brush up on econs. But... I just noted to myself to never start with econs homework!

they even gave us a complimentary 1kg tiramisu cake, a jug of beer, a bottle of white/red wine for signing up as the restaurant's member. tiramisu cake is yummmyyyyy!

buffet which i had wanted to kope. too bad it isn't our food :(

i should have eaten all the macarons! ^-^

didnt take any picture of the food. mummy did. (she was busy facebooking and uploading the pics on her fb hais .)

anyway, what i can remember vaguely on the menu are um.. Black pepper venison (i love venison!), prawn paste fried chicken, scallop, kangkong, sweet and sour fish, crab meat soup with corn, japanese special fried noodle (rockss!!!!!!!!! heavennnn!), yang chow fried rice , mango sago, carrotcake (i think..), golden butter prawns.. dont know if i missed out any~

this is how i spent my eve day-night!
met up with my YES group-minus Joan and Hanjia to celebrate eve.

I loved the hours i spent with them. Although we were at a lost of what to do initially we chatted and suanned the zilian king like maddd. Never once did i feel lonely while walking towards Cine! oh yes! shaoheng said i have grown skinnier over the past 6 mths! so miraculous lol! he must be cock eyed! At Cine, we did hilarious things while deciding what to watch and ended up with Japanese "Go Find A Psychic". Wanted to stroll around but got stuck at the highest level so we settled for photohunt. hahaha! SHC kept saying i'm pro at the food pics! Omg movie sucked when you first step in (but uh.. we were fifteen minutes late) cos the setting of the movie is like...80s.. 90s....Tokyo? Very disappointed in the beginning.. but it became really funny after awhile! ahhh i love the movie! Unexpectedly good and funny! I actually laughed till my stomach ached! Laughter is the best medicine :) it looked so noob.

Had dinner at Shokudo later. hehe. Went into Xinwang, sat down, and left. oops. and after dinner we just sat there and chitchat. i love that feeling. haha! yeling's great at talking :)

A pity he said one whole speech to her in a language i don't understand (yeling: "someone translate!?"). Tips for the guys! but seriously,the crowd is too dense and scary. not that good (unless she loves attention?)

just happened to see them in the camera.. so here's a little update!

beautiful cruise at night.

oh shiok, wonderful place ♥ i think it'd be nice if a couple of us friends go for a cruise to relax! hope i'll have a chance to do that in future ^-^

last day at the best complimentary restaurant! the best restaurant was a BBQ one . love it. we went there in our bathrobes and swimsuits, haha!

haha today went well! phew!~
finally! and he liked the present!

spent the day out at science centre, and town. keke. initially intended to play (piano) for him -only cos i owe him a song- but the school is closed! rahh. ruin my plans to make him prepare his own blindfold before i lead him to science centre. in the end tried to blindfold him with my hands but failed. bleh!

went for CSI exhibition cos i thought he would have liked it :(

all around the exhibition were stations like this to solve a case. each group will be given one case in the beginning, and can always go back for more after solving each case.
we got a case on the house collision.

anw, this is at the extra exhibition! on the first step in you'll see case 4. if you solved case 4 u stand a chance to win ipad 4! this case is unguided, so yep, no incentive to try it.
after the case exhibition there will be many smaller exbitions with investigation tools! those were funner and more suitable for our age xD
if not for those smaller exhibitions i'd say it's not recommendable. hahahhaa.

had lunch at the cafe nearby! i prepared this in the morn! =) had always wanted to make a bento, and now i have someone to make it for :)

my gift-shaped rice cubes were spoilt. top right hand corner :( and the sushi were flying around :(

cute right! personal fave!! =)) p.s they're heartshaped eggs! i learnt it from here.

only this sushi in the lunchbox is bought!

next, to the science centre! this was unplanned. hehehe.

today was pretty awesome! J came to my house before we went out together, with my family.
hahas!
went ot the ice skating rink but couldn't ice skate due to a competition.
sis said she wants to join (cos we tricked that she could join today) oh well actually she could, but it's not feasible.

hahas. ended the day with a dinner at nihon mura!:) ribencun!

wheewheet! back from cruise!
quite sad that i missed 2K's chalet though, cos it must have been awesome.
but quite happy i went for the cruise instead because i won't be as tired as i would have been if i went for 2K's chalet.

anyway, i have awesome news!!
mummy has given the consent to my relationship! haha phrasing it this way makes me shy.
point is, she has!~ no more lying for me! =))
i am really uncomfortable with lying, especially to my mum. Makes me feel uneasy everytime she questions where i am going, who i am with, etc. Furthermore, it's great to share everything with her! Now, i can have um, a mother-daughter gossip behind J's back! wheewheet! Jkin jkin!

kay, back to cruise!
no pictures cos mum is the main photographer (she really zilian)
first part of the cruise was just walking around blablabla, checking out the place. splendid!
Superstar Virgo has a huge slide! If you view it from shore, it actually looks freaky!
we settled down at Galaxy of the Stars, which is a club.
the singers there have great voices! random ppl went onstage to dance chacha. hahas.

next day spent walking around too.. saw the bball court and gym etc but couldnt gym cos i wasnt wearing sports shoes! so sian!
had chinese breakfast, mediteranean lunch (which tastes awful) and went to the room to sleep.
lol!
when we woke up again, we went to have a dip in the pool! hahas long time since i last touched water.it's fun, but i wont want to go swimming again cos of the dry skin resulting from swimming. then had dinner - bbq steamboat - in our swimming costumes and bathrobe! haha! quite glam oh. the food was delicious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YUM. loads of meat though! had turkey, chicken, fish fillet, mutton, prawn.
did i mention that i love fish fillets? :)) i love it in bbq, in fish fillet beehoon, and in everything else!! but i don't know what fish it is :(
nvm dont digress. this dinner is paid in the $100 debit that we're given per cabin when we board the cruise. it isn't in-cruise complimentary meal. so, obviously it tasted heavenly. the seafood soup was delicious too. mum loved it. hees!
and the desserts were alot better than those at the Mediteranean buffet.

hahas. went to watch a musical on Rasputin after that.
Ahhhh, i think i love musicals!!!!! :))) so happy and lively and artistic! i wna watch Voyage de la Vie! :) haha. there was a super flexible girl! she looked almost boneless! envy her T_T

the party is just as fun!
they had everybody gather to the "stage" and dance the dance steps they teach!
really enjoyable, though we just watched from the upper deck. oh, we danced up there. haha!
chocolate buffet full of pastries and chocolate. it was also the first time i tried chocolate sushi! (Y)(Y) miss it. should have eaten more :(

next day just sleep eat check out hello singapore. :)

Today, ___ msn-ed me and told me she quarrelled the first time with him and she cried over it. Then she said “I’ve nv quarrelled with you, ___” and I replied “Yea. that’s why we are not a couple.”

I was quite amused by my reply. I guess when it comes to being together with someone, you tend to have expectations. This tends to lead to miscommunications, arguments and hurt. Perhaps you will get irritated with some people, but because of the way society works, we tend to avoid confrontation and just whine or gossip our irritations away. However, when it comes to your closer ones, maybe it’s because we interact with them more than others, maybe it’s because we are able to show our true selves to them, we tend to hurt them more. Moreover, for others, you can shrug it off by reasoning that these people don’t understand you or they are not worth the effort; yet this certainly doesn’t apply when it comes to your closer ones.

Went for PTR yesterday and was stationed at the villa carpark to um.. usher.
Boring job, but oh well, not bad because J was there too~

Loads of nyona stuff, like nyona pulut, kuehs, etc. There was Kueh Paiti and according to jw's judgement, heavenly popiah! THere were chinese dimsum too, like harkow and dumpling! and even angmoh desserts liek macaroons! To add on to the list, there's meerebus/meegoreng too!

Sometimes I think I annoy people when i dont usually think about that. I only think that when i'm irrational. hehe
